This wood slice ornament idea is great way to add a touch of nature-inspired charm to your holiday decor! In this step by step tutorial learn how to cut, paint, and decorate pinecones to look like flowers. This simple wood slice ornament diy makes great Christmas gifts or just for fun!
What you will need:
- Wood slice
- Drill- I used a 3/16 size drill bit
- Paint brush (use a size that will fit your pinecone)
- Small pinecones Loppers- makes cutting the pinecones easier!
- Dark red acrylic paint (I used gloss enamels for the shine)
- White acrylic paint
- Bright red acrylic paint
- Dark green/light green acrylic paint
- Fake leaves and greenery
- Mod Podge
- Small gold beads
- Ribbon or twine to hang ornament
Craft Steps:
1. Take your wood slice and drill hole near the top. We used a 3/16 size drill bit. Don’t forget to put a piece of scrap wood underneath so you don’t drill through the table!: 00:14
2. Cut pinecones in half with loppers. These are the best way I’ve found to cut pinecones! If it doesn’t fall in half just twist the back of the pinecone. Try a few different kinds of pinecones for different shaped flowers: 00:20
3. Paint pinecones with dark red paint. Don’t worry about painting the underside but make sure to paint the fronts and the sides. I used a medium flat brush: 1:11
4. Paint highlight layer on primary petals. I mixed a little bright red in with my white and lightly brushed in on each main petal with a round brush: 1:40
5. Paint bright red layer on highlighted petals. Once the highlight layer is dry, use just bright red to do a final coat: 1:58
6. Paint center of pinecone flower with dark/light green: 2:14
7. Glue leaves and flower to wood slice. I used hot glue because it works instantly, but if you are concerned about longevity try using something like e6000: 2:41
8. Glue other decorations as needed. These sparkling decorations were found at the dollar store!: 2:59
9. Use ModPodge to attach small gold beads. I just used a small craft brush to dab on the glue. Don’t use a good paint brush for this!: 3:36
10. Add ribbon or twine to hang. I also found the ribbon at the dollar store and loved how it brought out the red and gold in the flower: 3:57
Finished! I tried both twine and ribbon. These don’t have to be just for Christmas, you could use the same concept to paint the pinecones whatever color you like. You could even paint the wood slice a color to give the pinecone flower a different background.
You could also leave the pinecone halves unpainted to give them a more natural look. Note, to glue the pinecones you may want to use e6000 glue for an extra strong hold if you plan to sell them and give them as gifts, however we haven’t had any issues with hot glue. These ornaments make great Christmas gifts for friends and family!
