Painted Seat Cushion

Have you ever had a stain you couldn’t get out? Why not paint over it! Paint is everywhere in our house and not always where it’s welcome. Sometimes I find it on the floor, walls, ceiling…even the furniture! We had a bench with a white cushion in our dining room, and of course I did a lot of painting at the kitchen table at the time. During one project a drop of red paint got on the cushion and dried before I found it.

I *could* have just turned the cushion upside down and ignored the matter but instead I wanted to try something. I had heard you could paint fabric with watered down craft paint, so instead I turned this happy accident into an opportunity.

First I sprayed down the cushion with water to help the paint soak in. I also watered down the pain slightly so that the fabric wouldn’t dry stiff. The paint I used was Apple Barrel acrylic which is also water based. Using a brush and a sponge I blended different colors in sections.

A round sponge called a spouncer was used to make polka dots and I couldn’t resist added black swirls with a detail brush. Can you tell where the design inspiration came from??

Once the cushion was dry I just simply put it back on the bench. The fabric did dry a little stiffer but not enough to make it uncomfortable. The paint also does not rub off on clothing and the seat can be used like a normal bench.

I haven’t spilled anything else on the cushion to date so I haven’t had to clean it. In the future if I might add a waterproof sealer because the paint itself was water based and may fade if washed…but to be honest, if a stain does occur and that happened I could just paint over it again!

Would you try this? Once I found out painting fabric is an option I went a step further and created my first Splatter Chair. Check it out here.
