This wine bottle scarecrow has been getting a lot of attention lately so I thought I would write a more detailed tutorial! In case you missed it, here was the original video:
To make your own, here are the supplies you will need:
- A clear wine bottle
- LED cork lights (optional)
- Luau grass skirt (from Dollar Tree) or similar material
- Glass paint colors: orange, black, and white
- Fall Decor (leaves, berries, etc, also can be found at Dollar Tree)
- Hot glue
- Burlap fabric: 3-3.5 inches wide (length varies depending on bottle)
- Find an empty wine bottle and make sure it’s entirely clean. I took some rubbing alcohol and wiped off the outside to make sure everything would stick to it with no problem.
2. Find a material that looks like straw. I used a luau skirt from dollar tree that worked PERFECT for this! If you watched the video, you saw that I cut off a section of this and used a stick to stuff it into the wine bottle. You don’t need to pack it super tight but enough to make it look full. NOTE: I used LED wine bottle cork lights in mine. I put them in the bottle first, but lights are totally optional.
3. Using some 3-3.5 inch wide burlap strips, hot glue a hat “rim” around the bottom of the neck of the botte. See how I am pleating it around the bottom of the neck so the outside edge becomes wavy. I glued each pleat into place.
4. For the top of the hat, glue a longer strip of burlap around the neck of the bottle and wrap it around a few times (width and length will very on bottle size!)
5. I used glass paint to paint on a face. I have also seen others use vinyl to make the eyes, nose, and mouth. In the video you can see me using a small detail brush. I will also say that painting on glass is tricky because you will need to do multiple coats to get a solid color. Make sure it’s completely dry before adding another layer or layering on another color. Here is an up close on the face design I came up with:
6. Don’t forget to decorate the hat! I had some fall décor from Dollar Tree that was a perfect hat accent. Just a little more hot glue and…
There’s a scarecrow wine bottle! I also stuffed a little more of the luau skirt material in the top of the hat, but that’s also totally optional.
Here it is with the lights on! Some of you had concerns about the lights catching fire…I have never had a problem with LED lights getting hot enough to catch anything on fire. LEDs don’t typically get hot compared to regular light bulbs, but if you are worried, again the lights optional…I think it looks cute both ways!
Now you’re ready to start decorating for fall! Have fun and Happy Creating! 🙂
