DIY CD Disco Ball

Have any old CD’s sitting around? Grab your glue gun and create your very own disco ball!

When we created our Unconventional Christmas Tree in 2016 I came up with the idea of a disco ball hanging over the center of the tree. Not only did it make a great tree topper, but it stayed hanging in our living room long after the tree was gone.

Watch the process in this video:

First I cut the CD’s into small pieces. Some people try to cut them into perfect squares, but I went for a more random geometric look. Cutting them took awhile but was easier then I thought it would be with a sturdy pair of scissors. If you find that cutting them is too difficult you can boil them in water for a few minutes to help soften the plastic.

For the disco ball base you need to find something round as a base to attach the pieces to…I used a Styrofoam ball from the craft store. They typically have multiple sizes to choose from and are light enough to hang from the ceiling.

Tip: CD’s are shiny and get smudged easily. Wear a pair of gloves when gluing to keep from smudging the surface!

I started by hot gluing a line of the CD pieces around the center of the ball out worked my way out to the ends. You want to make sure to glue the pieces close together and may even need to cut some to fit. They should be snug like a puzzle so no white shoes through. Don’t be afraid to overlap!

The best part about using CD’s instead of mirrors are the rainbow tones that reflect of the pieces. To hang the ball we used a long screw with a hook and twisted it into the Styrofoam. We then used fishing line looped through the hook.

Now turn off the lights, grab a flash light, and let the party begin!
