We painted our ugly kitchen cabinets teal and now the kitchen is unrecognizable.
When we moved into our house the kitchen was practically falling apart. The dishwasher was ancient, and the old gas stove was just a place holder since the house had no gas lines or hookups. Appliances aside, the cabinets were a dark brown caked with grease and grime:
We removed the dishwasher and useless stove immediately, but had to live with this kitchen for an entire year. Recently we were able to give it a makeover. Yellow counters aren’t always a deal breaker, but cabinet colors can make or break the look. After researching kitchen colors to compliment yellow I decided to go with teal when I saw a 32 oz jar of “Timeless Teal” Decor paint from Art Minds.
We will eventually gut and replace the entire kitchen, but on a budget painting the cabinets seemed the best option. I wasn’t sure how well it would work, but let me tell you…this paint is amazing! I thought for sure I would need to get at least another container, but instead there was enough paint in that 32 oz jar to give the entire kitchen 2 coats of paint with a bit leftover.
Of course I didn’t do the back sides of the doors or inside the cabinets. The goal was to disguise the actual state of the cabinets with minimal effort until we get to replace it entirely.
Not only did I have enough paint for the entire kitchen, but I was able to finish painting in a single day!
The next day I set out to decorate the border. I had saved the leftover scrapbook paper from our stairwell makeover to help disguise the bare wood where you could tell wallpaper had been torn off by the previous owners.
By using the same method I used on our stairwell, I fit each piece of paper to the border and glued them in a complimentary order.
While I did this my husband took the time to clean off all the cabinet hardware. Who else has these?! I’ve had them before, yet I’ve never seen ones so dirty. He spent hours cleaning off the grime to reveal their true color.
In the end it only took us 3 days to makeover the kitchen. The difference in color and lighting is incredible!
We even removed the decorative wood over the sink and added scrapbook paper to match.
The fridge decorations I’ve had from my DIY Refrigerator Decor post finally match the kitchen. When we moved to this house I saved them.
Do you have yellow counters? What color cabinets did you use with them? Let me know in the comments!
